Vocabulary Strategies

How do you help students learn new vocabulary words? For a content area subject, usually there are certain words that are necessary to know in order to discuss the material or complete and assignment. However, when it comes to reading, how can we expose and teach our students as many words as possible?

  • One possible solution is to focus on prefixes, roots, and suffixes as they help students decipher words that are unknown to them.

  • Another is to focus on developing context clues skills so students might be able to access words they don't know to the best of their ability without a dictionary or resource.

What's the best way to deal with teaching set content area vocabulary so that students remember and can use those terms when discussing learning?

How do you encourage students to apply their vocabulary knowledge?

How do you expose students to new vocabulary words to widen their vocabulary?
